2015 — 2022

At the time of his retirement, the winningest male French Bulldog in AKC history.

Born February 12, 2015. His sire Hollywood was a double Parker — the concentrated American bloodline. His dam Baba was a Wham granddaughter — the European foundation. A decade of deliberate breeding converged in one dog.

First French Bulldog to achieve GCHP2 (Platinum II Grand Champion) status. #1 Non-Sporting Dog in 2018. 1,819 Grand Champion Points. First BIS July 14, 2016. Won Best of Breed at the 2022 FBDCA National Specialty — seven years into his career, after a Chagas diagnosis and a documented stroke. 900 total AKC awards.

2013 —

"The die is cast." — Julius Caesar

Born September 5, 2013. La Bête's first great champion — the proof before Princeton made it history. Junior World Winner at the 2014 World Dog Show in Helsinki. Canadian and Italian Champion. FBDCA National Specialty winner 2019.

Co-owned with Patricia Hearst Shaw. Handled throughout her career by Jodi Longmire. Westminster Kennel Club: Best of Opposite Sex 2016 and 2017. Group 1 at Morris & Essex 2015.

Still competing. Rubi has been shown in AKC veteran classes at the FBDCA National Specialty in 2023 and 2024, winning the Veteran 11+ class at eleven years old. She won veteran classes at Florida specialties as recently as June 2025. The die, it seems, is still being cast.

The Beginning

December 2008. Biloxi, Mississippi. First show. Dead last. They were ready to quit.

Judy King and her granddaughter Alyssa told them not to. Pete was an engineering executive with a Ph.D. in biomolecular engineering. Blake had been a high school teacher and took on the kennel full time. They came to French Bulldogs through a companion named Effie, started in a Houston townhouse, and built the program from scratch.

They moved to Attleboro, Massachusetts. Then San Antonio. They studied pedigrees obsessively, flew across the Atlantic for semen from the right dog, treated every breeding as a scientific hypothesis, and held health above conformation — always.

They produced one of the most successful French Bulldog breeding programs in AKC history.

"There is nothing wrong with having a gene for anything — so long as we admit it, discuss it, and work around it."

— Peter J. Photos, 2009

2008 — 2022

It ended not from a loss of commitment,
but from an abundance of it.

La Bête French Bulldogs closed in 2022. The decision came because of Chagas disease — a parasite carried by the triatomine kissing bug, endemic to South Texas — which caused the loss of several dogs including Princeton. Continuing to raise French Bulldogs in that environment was not reconcilable with the health-first philosophy that had always defined the program.

The program ended at the height of its success. It ended because of who bred these dogs, not in spite of it.
